Accepting an assignment of the cultural centre of Strombeek, photographer Isabelle Pateer created an intriguing series of portraits entitled ‘Panoptiek’ (‘Panopticum’) featuring photographs of, among others, performing artists, musicians and expressive artists that had been scheduled to visit the cultural centre during the season 2004 - 2005.

These portraits already have been exhibited in the foyer of the cultural centre, each time in five installments of five black and white photographs. This retrospective compiles all portraits of the ‘Panoptiek’ project, exhibiting them in the large art hall of the centre.

‘Panoptiek’ contains portraits of Gabriel Rios, Rik Vermeersch, Michel François, Lucas Vandervorst, Willy the Sauter, Luc Nuyens, Dirk Tuypens, father Gereon van Boesschoten, Everlyn Nicodemus, Pascal Schumacher, Ryszard Turbiasz, Manu Comté, Urmie Plein, Pieter De Buysser, Walter Vergaelen, e.a.

Alongside these portraits belonging to the ‘Panoptiek’ project, another series of portraits of artists connected to the municipial museum of contemporary arts of Ghent (S.M.A.K.) is displayed, as well as a series of documentary photographs about factory workers in Kiev, Ukrain. The series of portraits of S.M.A.K. artists consists of photographs of Michael Borremans, Leo Copers, Guillaume Bijl, Wim Delvoye, Royden Rabinowitch, Masato Kobayashi, Ronny Delrue, Johan Tahon, Philippe Vandenberg, Jan de Cock, e.a.

Isabelle Pateer graduated in 2003 from the photography department of Sint Lukas in Brussels. She has been associated to the PhotoMuseum of the Province of Antwerp, working as a project manager since October 2003. Moreover she has been working as a freelance photographer since 2004, having started her own photographic ‘Otherweyes’.
